Anime Monologues for Auditions Vol. 1
Monologues are the voice actor's gym. They build vocal stamina, emotional range, and the ability to sustain character through arc and silence. For audition practice, anime-style monologues sharpen tonal shifts from whisper to scream, comedy to heartbreak, all in seconds. Pick one. Read it loud. Record it. Repeat.
Want to work with me one-on-one?
Steel Remembers - Kazuhiro Tomé - rugged stoic ronin
"You think this blade is just metal? (slow exhale, eyes narrowing) Forty-seven men. That's how many it's tasted. Forty-seven names I carry. (beat) My master told me a sword chooses its wielder. I laughed at him. Then I watched him die in the rain, and the steel found my hand before I'd made the choice. (quiet bitter chuckle) You came here for a duel. A story. Something to tell the men in the next village. (steps forward, voice hardening) I'll give you a story. But I won't be the hero in it. (draws blade slowly) Last chance. Walk away. Live long enough to grow old, hate your wife, drink bad sake. (raises sword, eyes blazing) NO? THEN COME! LET THE STEEL DECIDE!"
The Sun Won't Wait - Hina Aoyama - relentlessly optimistic dreamer
"Hey! HEY! (grabs their arm) You're not allowed to give up! Did you hear me? I made a rule! (laughs, then suddenly serious) Listen. When I was seven, my mom told me the sun rises every single day, even when nobody's watching. Even when it's cloudy. Even when the whole world's asleep. (smile growing) It just... shows up. Because that's its JOB. (pokes their chest) That's our job too, dummy! We show up! We try! We fall on our faces and our noses bleed and our knees get scraped and we LAUGH about it later! (eyes welling but grinning) So get up. Please. (whispers) I can't do this without you. (then loud, fierce) I SAID GET UP! WE'RE NOT LOSING TODAY! NOT ON MY WATCH!"
The Gentle Monster - Reiji Kuroda - elegant sorrowful villain
"You expected fangs, didn't you? (soft amused smile) Horns. A throne of skulls. Something theatrical. (pours tea, hands steady) I used to be like you. I had a sister. I had a garden. I planted tomatoes that never quite grew right. (sets cup down) Then they came. The good people. With their good intentions and their righteous swords. (quiet) They burned the garden. They burned my sister. They left me alive. (looks up, eyes hollow) Do you know what mercy looks like, when it's pointed at you wrong? It looks like ash. (slow rise from chair) I am not your enemy because I am evil. I am your enemy because I survived. (voice cracking, then steel) Drink your tea, hero. Tomorrow we fight. Tonight... (sad smile) ...let's pretend the world still has tomatoes."
I Saw You First - Daichi Mori - prideful explosive rival
"You think I don't see it? (scoffs) The way they look at you now. Like you're some kind of miracle. (pacing) I trained five years before you ever picked up a blade. FIVE YEARS! Bleeding knuckles. Broken ribs. Sleeping in the dojo because home meant my father's belt. (turns sharply) And then YOU show up. Smiling. Easy. Like it was all a game. (jabs finger) I HATE that smile. I hate it because it's REAL. Because you don't even know what you have. (quieter, dangerous) But I'm going to take it. Not your power. Your PEACE. I'm going to push you so hard, fight you so long, that one day you'll look in the mirror and see ME staring back. (grins fiercely) THEN we'll be equals. THEN I'll finally be able to BEAT YOU!"
The Last Lesson - Master Genshu - weary wise mentor
"Sit down. (settles slowly, joints creaking) No, not there. Across from me. Look me in the eye. (long pause) When I was your age, I had a teacher. Brilliant man. Cruel man. He taught me everything I know and nothing I needed. (sad chuckle) I swore I'd be different. (beat) I'm not. I've been hard on you. Harsher than I should have been. You came here broken and I handed you a hammer instead of a bandage. (eyes wet) I'm sorry, kid. I really am. (deep breath) But here's the thing about hammers. (small smile) Used right? They build. (stands with effort) Now. (voice growing strong) ENOUGH WHINING! On your feet! The world doesn't care that I was wrong! The world only cares if you're READY! And by the gods, you WILL BE!"
Wrong Side of the Blade - Vance Iwasaki - haunted vengeful drifter
"Don't. (raises hand without looking) Don't say my name like you know me. You read a file. You watched me fight once. That's not knowing. (lights cigarette, hands shaking) I killed eleven men last week. You want to know how many deserved it? (exhales smoke) Nine. The other two? (long pause) The other two had families. The other two were just... in the way. (quiet, broken) I tell myself it's the mission. The cause. The bigger picture. (laughs bitterly) Lies taste like copper after a while. (turns finally, eyes black) You came here to recruit me. To save me. To tell me there's still good inside. (steps close, voice low and dangerous) There isn't. Walk away. Before I prove it. (beat) I said... (sudden snarl) WALK AWAY!"
Three Moves Ahead - Lady Suzume - calculating cold tactician
"You came alone. (faint smile) Brave. Stupid. Both, really. (circles slowly) Tell me, when you walked through that gate, did you notice the second guard had been replaced? (tilts head) The wine you drank in the hall. The window left open in the east wing. The servant girl who smiled at you a moment too long. (stops) Every step you took, I placed. Every breath you've drawn in this castle has been mine to allow. (cold laugh) You think you're the hunter. (leans in, whispers) Sweet boy. You're the bait. (straightens, voice sharpening) But I'll give you a chance. Because I respect courage, even foolish courage. Walk out the north gate. Don't look back. Don't return. (eyes ice) Or stay. And learn what it means to LOSE A GAME YOU NEVER KNEW YOU WERE PLAYING!"
The Hunger - Garrok Yamada - savage berserker warlord
"WEAK! (spits) That's what they called me. The clan elders. The whispering aunts. The girls who wouldn't meet my eyes. WEAK! (laughs, wild and wrong) Look at me now. Look at the mountain of bones I built from their NAMES! (gestures behind him) Every skull a story. Every story ends the same way. ME. STANDING. THEM. NOT. (breathing heavy, then quiet) You think you can stop me? You? (steps forward) I've eaten gods, friend. CHEWED THEIR LIGHT. I've drunk from rivers that ran red because I made them run red. (voice rising to a roar) AND I AM STILL HUNGRY! Still HOLLOW! Still WEAK in places no blade can reach! (grins, manic) So COME ON! FEED ME! GIVE ME YOUR STRENGTH! YOUR STORY! YOUR NAME! ADD ANOTHER SKULL TO THE MOUNTAIN! HAHAHAAA!"
Tea at the End of the World - Yura the Wanderer - cryptic gentle prophet
"Sit. The tea is almost ready. (smiles softly) No, don't apologize for being late. You arrived exactly when you were supposed to. (pours) I've been making this same tea for sixty-three years. Different kettles. Different mountains. Same tea. (chuckles) People always ask me what I'm waiting for. (sets cup before them) Today, the answer is you. (long pause) There's a road behind you. I can see it in your shoulders. A road full of people who needed you to be stronger than you were. (gentle) That road ends here. At this table. (eyes warm, knowing) Drink. (beat) When you stand up, you'll know what to do. You won't believe me now, but you will. (whispers) The world is so much bigger than the cage they built for you. (smiles) Drink, child. The journey starts with the cup."
I Never Asked For This - Kenji Hara - reluctant frightened champion
"STOP CALLING ME THAT! (slams hand) I'm not a hero! I'm not the chosen anything! I'm a kid who works at a noodle shop and got struck by lightning ONE TIME! (panicked laugh) You think I want this? You think I asked for the visions? The voices? The sword that BURNS in my hands every time I touch it? (holds up bandaged hands, shaking) Look at me. LOOK! I cried last night. I threw up before the last fight. I'm seventeen years old and I have nightmares about the people I couldn't save! (voice breaking) I'm not strong. I'm not brave. I'm just... (long breath) ...the only one left. (slowly straightens, eyes hardening) And maybe that's the answer. Maybe heroes aren't born. Maybe they're just the ones who don't get to run. (picks up sword) Fine. FINE! LET'S GO!"
